Who Are You?

What brings you here tonight?
Did something not go right?
Did something go wrong?
Do you belong out on the street
where people hold their hold their own
and some . . . some they don’t.

Wrapping her arms around herself,
she remembers less each day.
Yeah, the memory’s quick to fade
as the pain comes in in waves.
Not like the even tides,
it rushes in from every side.

Who, who are you if not alone?
Who, who are you when you have no place to call your own?
Who, who are you?

Well, I find little peace,
I try to sleep only to see his face worn with age,
dressed in sorrow and shame, am I to blame?
And who will remember you?
When we have our choice will we choose
To look at you and wonder who you are?
Can you seem that far away?
Are you not still one of us?

Who, who are you if not alone?
Who, who are you when you have no place to call your own?
Who, who are you?

And your pride is not your downfall.
Your pride is all you have to stand up on.
And given no alternative, you’ll sleep beneath the stars,
that can’t be seen past these city lights.
They give no warmth, cast only shadows as we walk on by, walk on by.
And where is this kindler, gentler nation?
Where is this world where all are free?
We say, “Go home!” to the children in the street.
What if they have no place to go home to?

Who, who are you if not alone?
Who, who are you when you have no place to call your own?
Who, who are you if not the lonely, lonely ones?
Who, who are you when you have no place to call your own?
No place to call your home?
